This past weekend, following his victory over Thiago Silva, Gustafsson was asked about going after the UFC light heavyweight champion.
“I want to fight the top-five guys in the world in my division, but if (UFC) were to give me a title shot, I would be more than ready if that day comes,” Gustafsson said during the post-fight press conference for UFC on FUEL TV 2.
“The Mauler” has lost just once in his UFC and MMA career, falling to Phil Davis via submission. Since that defeat, Gustafsson has tallied five straight victories. Among his triumphs are TKO wins against Vladimir Matyushenko and Matt Hamill, along with two submission triumphs.
Currently, the UFC light heavyweight belt is held by Jon Jones, who has a title defense set for this Saturday night against Rashad Evans. Dan Henderson has also been promised a championship match, and “Hendo” is likely to go after the 205-pound belt.
That leaves Gustafsson back in the line, and likely needing another performance like his victory over Silva to get in the talk for a shot at the belt either in late 2012 or early 2013.
